How to Build a 5-Step Korean Skincare Routine (Without Guessing)

A complete 5-step Korean skincare routine displayed on pedestals

The famous "10-step Korean routine" scared off a generation of beginners. In practice, most K-beauty routines, including what most Koreans actually do daily, come down to five steps. The order is the easy part. The hard part is that each step has dozens of candidates, and the right pick depends on your skin, not the bestseller list.

The five steps, and what each is actually for

  1. Cleanser: removes oil, sweat and sunscreen without stripping. Your skin should feel clean, never squeaky or tight. (If you wear makeup or heavy sunscreen, an oil cleanser first, the double cleanse, does the heavy lifting.)
  2. Toner: in the Korean sense, not the harsh astringent of decades past, a first layer of hydration that preps skin to absorb what follows.
  3. Serum: the targeted step. This is where your main concern gets addressed: niacinamide for oil and pores, azelaic acid for redness, peptides and retinals for aging, hyaluronic acid for dehydration.
  4. Moisturizer: seals everything in. Texture matters as much as ingredients: gels for oily skin, creams for dry, something in between for combination.
  5. Sunscreen: the step that makes every other step worth doing. Korean sunscreens are famously elegant (no white cast, no grease), which is why people actually wear them daily.

Matching products to your skin (where everyone gets stuck)

Choosing well means answering three questions honestly: What's your skin type, oily, dry, combination, or normal? What's the one concern that bothers you most? And is your skin sensitive, does it flush, sting, or react to fragranced products? Those three answers eliminate most of the catalog. An oily-skinned, breakout-prone 22-year-old and a dry-skinned 40-something chasing fine lines should share almost nothing except sunscreen.

The classic beginner mistakes are picking products by hype instead of skin type, introducing five new products in one night (see our patch-testing guide for why that backfires), and stacking multiple strong actives before the skin barrier is ready. A good routine is boring in the best way: gentle base, one targeted active, sunscreen every morning.

Or skip the research spiral entirely

We built our skin quiz to do this matching for you. Eight questions (skin type, main concern, sensitivities, exclusions like fragrance or essential oils) checked against the real ingredient data of every product we stock. It returns a complete 5-step routine with alternatives for every slot, and because everything comes in sample sizes, you can test the entire routine for roughly the price of one full-size product.

Try the routine. Keep what your skin loves. Buy full sizes of only those. That's the whole philosophy. Start with the quiz or browse all samples.
